A poem written by Ronald Bottrall (1906-1989) aptly describes entropy in terms of natural evolution as a catalyst for rebirth.
‘Biomorphic’ is a body of work that thematically explores biophysical characters as they are expressed within the landscape. The paintings emphasise patterns and harmonies that exist, which underpin the physical world.
Entropy’s meaning inspired the creation of my biomorphic series. Entropy is derived from Greek meaning, ‘a turning towards’.
A biological system searches for order and balance but without disorder change does not occur and ennui settles in. Therefore, entropy is ‘the degree of disorder’ in the universe, which is the cornerstone of nature and renewal.
Within the landscape, macroscopic and microscopic patterns repeat themselves by dividing and sub-dividing, the human eye and brain perceives and interprets these patterns.
River tributaries and bifurcating tree branches are biomorphic forms, which contrast with capillaries, airways and synaptic nerve pathways in animals.
